Background of the study
Hashtagbased neologisms are a defining feature of Nigerian Twitter discourse, emerging as users creatively repurpose hashtags to coin new words and expressions. These digital neologisms reflect rapid social, political, and cultural changes, encapsulating complex ideas in concise formats (Akinyele, 2023). As hashtags spread virally, they contribute to an evolving lexicon that influences everyday language. The study conducts a comparative analysis of Twitter trends to identify the patterns and processes underlying hashtagbased neologism formation, examining both morphological and semantic shifts. This investigation provides insight into how digital communication facilitates lexical innovation and reshapes linguistic norms in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the prominence of hashtagbased neologisms on Nigerian Twitter, there is limited research on their formation, evolution, and impact on language. Existing studies tend to focus on the socio-political aspects of hashtags, neglecting their linguistic dimensions. This gap limits our understanding of digital word formation processes and the broader implications of lexical innovation in digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it deepens our understanding of lexical innovation driven by digital trends, providing valuable insights for linguists, media analysts, and digital communication strategists (Akinyele, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Twitter and focuses exclusively on hashtagbased neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse, excluding other platforms and offline contexts.
